Co-curricular at St Christopher's

Co-curricular at St Christopher's

‘Art develops spiritual values and contributes a wider understanding to the experience of life which helps build a balanced personality'. (Bridget Riley, painter)

Our programme of studies offers rich and diverse opportunities to extend and develop pupils’ art skills and knowledge, and make links with other areas of the curriculum wherever appropriate.

Educational visits to art exhibitions in both local and national galleries, local landmarks, and cross-curricular trips all inspire a range of projects.

The use of ICT and individual chrome books is also used to enhance personal learning and research into artists, craftspeople and designers.

Visitors in the creative arts are invited to run workshops in the school.

The curriculum is taught throughout the Upper and Middle school (Years 4-8) by our experienced and well-qualified specialist, Mrs Lomax. Weekly lessons take place in a well-lit and equipped art room which also functions as an upper school form room.

Art forms an important part of the Pre-Prep, where it is taught by form teachers from Reception to Year 3.

Excellence in art is celebrated through vibrant displays beyond the art room into all areas of the school. Art assemblies give pupils the opportunity to show and talk about their work and projects to the whole school.  Annual public art exhibitions are held, and all pupils are encouraged to enter a variety of art competitions and events such as ‘The Big Draw’.  School plays, concerts and charity fundraising also provides opportunities to participate in set design, programmes and posters.

Upper School pupils who show exceptional interest and talent are encouraged to submit portfolios of work for a range of 13+ art awards and scholarships, and the school offers internal art scholarships to Year 6 candidates.

After school art clubs and masterclasses are offered to our gifted and talented pupils.
