The Head’s reflections on the week

Posted: 11th April 2025

Welcome back to the Summer Term! I am delighted to start with some Scholarship news. The Millennium Scholarships to Brighton College are their All Rounder awards, asking candidates to demonstrate their abilities in three different areas from academia to sporting and co-curricular. It is my pleasure to announce that Henry in 8H and Saskia in 8A have both been awarded Millennium Scholarships. This is not quite the end of the current round, as we have two more candidates to be considered. Well done to all who put themselves forward for this challenging process and showed their considerable range of skills to their future school.

The first week of the holidays saw our first ever trip to Iceland, led by Ms Laatz and her team. I was very glad that they missed the volcanic eruption, but Ms Laatz tells me that the Icelandic people see these as a minor inconvenience! We hope to run this trip again in two years’ time, alternating with our biennial Ski Trip.

Back to the present, and it has been wonderful to have some sunshine this week! We are very much back into the swing of things already (as befits Cricket Season) and there is a lot of excitement about events to come this term. There is much to look forward to, with trips planned to the theatre, Brighton Toy Museum, the Jubilee Library, Stanmer Park, and Warner Bros Studios in London. Year 7 will head off on their residential trip to France, immersing themselves in the language, culture, and indeed food. Year 5 and 6 will have their own shorter residentials to Oakwood Outdoors Centre. Year 8 have their important exams this term, but also the Leavers’ Trip immediately after the Common Entrance exams finish, with time for lots of fun and games on the glorious Jurassic Coast in Dorset.

We also have Sports Days for Pre-Prep and Prep Schools this term, and the Upper School’s performance of High School Musical at The Barn Theatre is at the end of June, for which tickets will be on sale shortly.

We are a month away from our annual participation in the Brighton Festival Artists’ Open Houses event. This year, we are part of the West Hove Arts Trail. Please spread the word of this event, and our Open Morning the previous day, to anyone you think would like to visit our community and learn more about us at two very different events.
